Stir Fry Garlic Prawns

Garlic Prawns

Want to make an easy seafood dish in under 15 minutes? Then you have to try this amazing stir fry garlic prawns dish! This recipe is quick and easy to make and looks spectacular on the dinner table.

As a child, I think one of my absolute favourite dishes that was served at the dinner table was this buttery garlic prawns dish. I was never the biggest fan of seafood but prawns was always an exception. We would often make this dish to accompany other Chinese dishes, such as sautéed garlic spinach and steamed black bean salmon. As a kid, I always poured the remainder of the garlic sauce onto my rice for extra flavour.

What ingredients I use to make these Chinese garlic prawns:

This buttery garlic prawns dish requires very little ingredients. The main ingredients are ready-peeled prawns, garlic, salt, garlic granules and unsalted butter. I also like to add some red or brown onions to the dish, but that’s more for colour – it’s not a necessity.

You can easily make this dish using fresh, shelled prawns if you prefer, however I find it easier to use ready-peeled prawns.

How to pan fry garlic prawns:

When preparing this dish, I like to cut the raw prawns to make them cook in a butterfly shape. To do this, you simply need to cut along the deveined outer edge of the prawns. I cut about ⅔ into the prawns (see video).

Pan frying these garlic prawns is very quick and easy. Simply cook the garlic and onions first, before adding the prawns. Continuously stir the contents until the prawns turn pink. Once the prawns are cooked, add the salt, garlic granules and butter to the pan.

What to serve with butter garlic prawns:

These Chinese garlic prawns can easily be served with a bowl of plain white jasmine rice. But you can always serve these buttery garlic prawns with different vegetables, fish or meats.

Can you freeze garlic prawns?

Garlic prawns are best served fresh. You can buy a bag of uncooked prawns and then defrost those when you want to cook this buttery garlic prawns recipe. I wouldn’t recommend freezing the prawns after they are cooked.

Are garlic prawns healthy?

This stir fry garlic prawns recipe is not the healthiest dish to make, however I wouldn’t consider it completely unhealthy either. It consists of prawns, garlic and onions, all of which contain some natural health benefits. The most unhealthy part of this dish is the butter – you can choose to put more or less butter to the dish as you prefer.

Are garlic prawns keto friendly?

This garlic prawns dish uses red onions, which are generally not found in a keto diet. However, you can easily make this dish without the red onions, making it keto friendly. The only reason I add the red onions to this dish is for extra colour – it’s definitely not a requirement to make these delicious garlic prawns.

Hints and Tips:

  • Don’t cook it at high heat or the butter will burn.

  • If you want some extra spice, you can add some chopped chilli or chilli flakes
