Delicious And Simple Steamed Salmon With Black bean Sauce Recipe

black bean salmon

This is a quick and easy steamed black bean salmon recipe. It’s a very popular dish in a Chinese household and is so easy to make. It’s such a traditional Chinese dish that my family makes all the time and a dish that you won’t easily find in a typical Chinese takeaway!

How To Make Black Bean Salmon:

To make this steamed salmon in black bean sauce dish, you’ll need:

  • salmon fillets
  • black beans
  • garlic
  • sesame oil
  • light soy sauce
  • shaoxing wine (pale dry sherry)
  • ginger

Alternative Ingredients:

Fish – I like to use salmon fillets when making this dish, as I find the belly pieces the most succulent. If you don’t want to use salmon, an alternative to salmon fillets is mackerel fillets. Mackerel fillets taste just as good, and are cheaper than salmon fillets.

The sauce – The ingredients listed in this recipe require you to make the black bean sauce yourself. However, you can buy pre-packaged black beans and garlic sauce from a Chinese supermarket. This is a useful sauce to buy if you want to save time. If you do use the black bean sauce, then it substitutes the black bean or garlic in your ingredients list

I find the sesame oil and the light soy sauce essential to this dish, however the shaoxing wine can be optional. If you don’t live in a Chinese household the chances are you wouldn’t find shaoxing wine in your cupboard. My family also likes to add spring onions and ginger, but they are not a necessity either.

What To Serve With Steamed Black Bean Salmon?

This dish is usually made to complement other Chinese dishes. My family usually makes a range of dishes, such as black bean ribs, stir-fried garlic prawns or Chinese BBQ spare ribs. Everyone at the dinner table has a bowl of plain white rice, and can then reach for whichever dish they want.

Does Black Bean Go With Salmon?

Yes! Black bean sauce goes perfectly with salmon! It’s such a typical Chinese dish to make because of its simplicity and is definitely worth a try! There are loads of Chinese dishes that use black bean dishes you can make, such as black bean chicken, black bean ribs or even stir fried black bean vegetables

Hints and Tips To Make The Best Steamed Black Bean Salmon:

  • If you don’t have a traditional Chinese bamboo steamer, you can use a large stock pot with a lid. Pour half an inch of water into the pot and place on a stainless steel steaming stand. Place the salmon dish onto the rack and put the lid on top. Let the salmon steam at medium heat until cooked.
